The department took legal action to request the expulsion of migrants who established a camp within the grounds of the Cavani stadium in Mayotte. To support his request, he asks local residents to provide proof of the possible disturbances it causes.
“Today we have a property that we cannot exploit because migrants have taken up residence there,” denounced this Thursday, November 30, the president of the departmental council, Ben Issa Ousseni, who added that he had filed a summary appeal to request the expulsion of the migrant camp installed within the grounds of the Cavani stadium. For two months, around sixty asylum seekers have been living there, from Rwanda, Somalia and Congo.
To justify its request, the department must demonstrate to the courts that this camp is causing unrest. Residents were asked to provide evidence, for example if they noticed unsanitary conditions or discomfort caused by smoke from their fires. If a person has fallen ill nearby, they are asked to send a letter from their doctor to the department. The department council is also asking for help from the Football League and the Regional Olympic and Sports Committee. Even if, so far, Regional 1 matches and training continue in the stadium without incident.
The prefecture, for its part, cannot organize evictions without rehousing proposals. A procedure which requires respecting a deadline of several months. The only short-term possibility is to prevent other migrants from settling with flagrant investigations. The police can carry out evictions if the occupation is noted less than 48 hours after the arrival of the occupants on the premises. Around ten homes were demolished by the police on Wednesday, November 22.
Mayotte is an archipelago in the Indian Ocean between Madagascar and the coast of Mozambique. Mayotte is one of the overseas departments of France as well as one of the 18 regions of France, with the same status as the departments of Metropolitan France, though traditional Mayotte culture is most closely related to that of the neighboring Comoros islands.
